Before leaving home

Read the official page for your chosen park or trail, including closures and permitted uses. Check the forecast for the time you plan to be outside. Save the specific trailhead or entry point so the drive ends where the walk actually starts.

Pack for the route you chose

Carry water, charged navigation, and suitable footwear. If a restroom, shade, or a particular surface is essential, verify it directly before leaving. Choose a return time and let the group know the plan. A short route should still be planned around current conditions rather than its distance alone.

Keep the outing easy to change

Use an out-and-back route when you are unfamiliar with the area. Turn around earlier if the weather, trail, or group needs change. Follow posted signs and leave natural areas as you found them. When you return, keep the details that worked; a repeatable local outing is often easier to maintain than an occasional ambitious one.
